Let our Senior Events Coordinator Hope share why Riddle’s Court is a perfect venue for your big day and what makes the building so special

What is your role at Scottish Historic Buildings Trust?

I am the senior event co-ordinator at Scottish Historic Buildings Trust. I am responsible for the sales, planning and coordination of the range of events we host at the historic Riddle’s Court. I have been at the Trust for a year and I have really enjoyed the opportunity not only to grow my own professional development but also contribute to the conservation of historic and iconic buildings across Scotland.

How many weddings do you look after per year?

As a team, we look after around 40 – 50 weddings per year, but personally I will typically look after around 20 weddings, this is from initial enquiry right through to co-ordinating on the big day but the exciting thing about working at Riddle’s Court is that we are a small team meaning I even get to see and help out at the weddings that have be planned by the other team members.

What does a typical wedding look like at RC?

The honest answer is we don’t have a ‘typical wedding’, each wedding that happens at Riddle’s Court is tailored to what the couple wants. We try our best to ensure the wedding we hold are as individualised and unique as possible. We have had small intimate elopements were the team members get to be witnesses but we have also have larger scale 80 person full day weddings and everything in between.

What do you think sets Riddle’s Court apart from the competition?

First thing that comes to mind is its location. We are right in the heart of the old town surrounded by other iconic buildings which is ideal for anyone with family coming from abroad as they get to see the best of Edinburgh particularly from the Geddes room which has an extraordinary view that extends all the way to the Pentland hills.

What can couples expect from you in the run up to the day?

As event coordinator I will work with each couple to help build a schedule for the day that works for them but also one that works well with the building. I also contact any suppliers they have booked to coordinate access and deliveries so that couples don’t have to worry themselves about the logistics of the day. Most importantly, I am available to answer last minute or panicked questions and to help ensure that couples feel supported through what can be a stressful few months of planning.

Any words of advice for couples looking to get married at RC?

My advice would be to have a think about what is important to you for the day. Before being influenced by friends and family have a discussion about the things that are really important to you whether that’s particular photos, a signature drink or a type of music you want. And most importantly – tell your event coordinator that way we can ensure you get want out of the day.

Your favourite feature in the building?

There are so many gorgeous spots in the building but I think the pentice stairwell is my favourite. It such an iconic feature of Riddle’s Court and I always encourage our wedding couples to get a least one photo on the stairs because it has a real ‘Romeo and Juliet’ feel to it.

What has been one of your favourite styles of wedding?

I love the elopements! Big wedding can be really fun and it’s great to see how people design their larger weddings but there is something so special about being a part of an elopement. It feels like such a privilege to be involved in such an intimate small ceremony. It’s also great to see couples have the wedding day that they want without any of the stress that comes with planning a big wedding.
